Why run a letterpress workshop in the 21st century?

We are no nostalgia addicts, nor are we Luddites. We believe in the coexistence of all media, be they digital or analog. With digital, we miss touching the material. Grasping means understanding, and that is exactly what you do in a letterpress workshop. You actually touch the white space, use only what’s available.
We do not have billions of colours nor 150k fonts. In fact, we thrive on constraints. Everything may take a little longer and there is no command-Z. Our presses are pretty indestructible and will survive us. But the knowledge how to use them is disappearing, so we are here to preserve it.
We’re using type that’s been around for hundreds of years, and we make new letters with lasers and CNC machines. We send data directly from our computers to our Heidelberg Cylinder press from 1954. That’s what Gutenberg would have done 500 years ago.
